Niwot, CO Real Estate
The town of Niwot, located ten minutes from Boulder and five minutes from Longmont, is a friendly, quiet community in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Residents enjoy a charming village lifestyle that includes award-winning restaurants, shops, festivals, parades and events throughout the year.
Named for Chief Niwot, an Arapaho Indian leader, this small community was an important early railroad link to markets in Wyoming and Denver. The Niwot Historic District includes buildings constructed in the early 1900s and the oldest operating Grange in Colorado.
Niwot is home to the tree sculpture park in the heart of downtown. The sculpture park showcases the talent of Eddie Running Wolf and his homage to the Native American tribe that lived in this valley, from whom Niwot got their name.

History
The town of Niwot is named for the leader of the Northern Arapahoe Indians who originally resided in the location where the town lies today. White settlers moved into the area in the mid-1800s, but it was the construction of the Colorado Central Railroad that allowed Niwot to grow. After the rail was laid, local farmers could transport produce and cattle to Denver, Boulder and Longmont. The town began with a small church, a one room schoolhouse and a cemetery. In the early 1900s, commercial buildings were constructed and the town began to print its own newspaper.
When the Diagonal Highway that connects Boulder to Longmont was constructed in the 1950s, many of Niwot’s original buildings were moved or torn down. Since then, new subdivisions have been added, and the town has grown into a beautiful suburban setting with a small town feel.
